Course Overview

This training course is designed to enhance the knowledge, ethical awareness, and reporting skills of journalists and media practitioners on the complex and evolving issue of migration in Nigeria. With rising migration trends, both voluntary and forced, across West Africa and increasing global scrutiny on migration narratives, the course offers a critical platform to improve the accuracy, balance, and impact of migration reporting in the Nigerian media landscape.

Participants will explore migration from multiple perspectives: local, national, and international, grounded in facts, ethics, and human rights. The course also emphasises the role of the media in countering misinformation, challenging stereotypes, and amplifying the voices of migrants and returnees.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand key concepts, trends, and drivers of migration within Nigeria and globally, including economic, environmental, social, and political factors.
  • Apply ethical standards and journalistic integrity in reporting migration issues, with sensitivity to vulnerable populations.
  • Identify and challenge misinformation and stereotypes related to migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
  • Develop compelling human-interest stories and investigative reports that bring migration experiences to life while informing policy and public discourse.
  • Engage meaningfully with migration stakeholders, such as government agencies (e.g. NIS, NAPTIP), returnees, civil society organisations, community leaders, and international partners.
